A group of seven alleged individuals of German left-wing extremist group face trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for targeting sites in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and called on the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or remain detained.”
