Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
