Approximately 50 automobiles have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.
Police say they were notified late on Wednesday night, when a individual noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.
The fluid had been drawn in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then found multiple other marked automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement state early analysis suggest the substance was probably human blood.
"There is still no lead as to its source; investigators are not yet informed of any injuries in connection with the event," they added.
Local authorities announced they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the public for information.
An important representative stated the incident rendered him stunned and needed to be addressed quickly.
"This event hits the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on online, referring to the killing of nine people by a shooter targeting people of foreign heritage in 2020.
